Uruguay is a fine wine Country that has a wine production in a privileged
climate ideal for winemaking.
Uruguay is located in the Southern Hemisphere, between the 30° to 35° latitude
similar to South Australia, New Zealand, Central Chile, Mendoza Argentina and

But Uruguay has the particularly that its wine industry has achieved the

Our moderated temperature and with clearly seasons between warm summers and
relatively cool winters allows to grow wine grapes practically without
artificial irrigation.

The topography at the South of Uruguay shows soft undulations, the soils are
clayey, allowing a great water drainage guaranteeing perfect conditions for wine
grapes to get the best red wines and white wines possible, very much appreciated
for worldwide wine importers and wine wholesalers.
Why Uruguay is a wine Country?
This begin with our history itself, because with the European immigrants
that arrived to Uruguay in the XIX century, they brought the wine culture
with all the wine recipes from their respective Countries like the French
wines, Italian wines, German wines, Spanish wines and so on. |
As the California wine grapes came from France,
the Uruguayan grape varieties are originally also from Europe, but recently in
the eighties there had been a complete reorganization of the wineries to produce
fine quality wines and in general based in some French varieties that had
adapted perfectly well to the Uruguayan soils. Today we have our own type of
wine with unique characteristics like the Tannat wine that we are the only
Country in the world that has a "Uruguayan Tannat wine", that is different to
the Tannat French wine.
Which are the grape varieties that Uruguay has?
In red wines the most important are Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon,
Tannat and
Cabernet Franc.
In white wines are: Chardonnay and
Sauvignon Blanc.
The vineyards of the
wineries
The total soils and their climate conditions are studied carefully before
the vineyard is planted to maximize the yield for its grape variety.
Regarding the vine growing is a balance between quantity, type of grape to
be planted, the productivity to achieve, and the final result is the best
quality wines possible. In general is used a lyre system, a method which
shape let the sun to reach the grapes easily.
The vines pruning is done by hand and always there is a ripeness control in
the vineyard & laboratory to monitoring the parameters like sugar level,
acidity, pH, etc.
The grape's harvest is totally done by hand in the early morning hours; the
best cool part of the day. Only the best grapes are selected at the
vineyard; at the winery there is a second selection before begin the
wine
process. |
